Blocked Websites

Blocked Websites

One’s place of employment is supposed to center around doing one’s work, for the benefit of the company the employee works for. But lets be serious, are 100% of employees on their computers doing nothing but work 100% of the time? They aren’t doing an occasional search for, say, a place for dinner, or maybe getting that last Christmas gift for a loved one, or even buying flowers for someone? Of course they are.

While I completely understand that sites like gambling sites, Facebook, and YouTube are blocked, but Best Buy? And my church? And my personal family website? Come on, that’s going just a little too far.

I am sure there are a number of other sites that are blocked too, I just haven’t stumble onto them. Or I did and I just don’t remember. Are they all worth it? Is an employee going to get irate because they can’t get to a site? Are they going to be distracted now because they have to try to figure out how they are going to get that tablet for Suzie for her graduation.

And is spending time chitchatting at the water cooler or in the break room or in the hall any different than spending a couple minutes looking something up and making an on-line purchase?

And most of the sites can probably be accessed on smart phones too. It is just usually easier to use the computer device they are on rather than pause, get their cell phone out, and try to get to whatever site they just thought of.

Being blocked from websites is certainly not something I’m going to miss. I will enjoy the unfettered access to whatever site I want when I am retired.
