Clothes

I’d like to hope that employees don’t go to work for the fashion show. I know I sure didn’t. My attire was slacks / “Dockers” and a long sleeve button shirt, or short sleeve Polo-style in July and August, or even a sweater in January.

I had quite a few pair of pants, and plenty of shirts. I wore them until they started to look a little worn. Then I replaced them out of necessity, not desire. And I usually bought clothes on sale, and hardly ever “name brand” labels. Why? First, see my other posts about savings and finances – that’d be a good start. And second, I didn’t care how I looked because I was there for my ability and knowledge, not what I wore.

There are people that like to dress nicely. If that’s your thing, fine. But then don’t come crying to me about not being able to save when you spend a day a month at the store buying clothes.

I know someone who would buy clothes and WEAR THEM ONE TIME. Really?!!? Not only is that a financial waste, it’s an environmental waste (and I don’t care if the clothes are donated, it is still a waste).

Do most people care that someone wears the same outfit once a month? Probably not. In fact, if someone is keeping THAT close of an eye on what someone is wearing, they either really, REALLY like that person; or they need more work to do because they don’t seem to be busy enough to mind their own business.

Sure, there in an entire industry based on getting people to wear the “latest and greatest”. There are now even subscription services that will allow you to get new clothes on a regular bases. To me? Don’t bother – not going to happen.

And as I approach retirement, the need for new or even more clothes will decrease. Or perhaps the type of clothes will change. I certainly won’t wear slacks and button shirts as often. Probably once a week to church, and…. one or two other days during the week, maybe when going out to dinner. And for a week or two jaunt on a European river cruise too. But other than that? Not so much.

Admittedly there was a time when I spent a fair amount of money redoing my wardrobe – but that was because I lost so much weight that nothing fit. Well. Nothing fit well. Pants were especially baggy, and even the shirts were too large. Unless my figure changes drastically between now and the end of my breathing, I probably won’t need to buy many more clothes.

Having to worry about what I wear, having to “dress up” every day, and having to consider buying clothes is certainly something I will not miss.
