My last post was about internal job postings. This one is similar, but deals with external job postings, aka job boards.
I have nothing against these boards as they serve a purpose. In fact, I used them extensively when I was out of work for a brief period of time in the 2008 time frame. I hit all of them up (so as to not offend any, I won’t name any directly): “InkedOut”, “Scary Creature”, “InDeep”, “ProfessionConstructor”, and the others.
While in the peak of the career, it is important to keep these boards up to date, though some are more for “mySpace for professionals” – they have a persistent presence – than they are “here’s a job, now go away.” But there is a need to keep it up to date with new skills learned, or training courses taken, or some other career enhancement.
But while approaching retirement. these boards are one of those things, like the internal job boards, that can be completely ignored. I guess, though, that immediately after retirement one has to visit whichever ones need to be visited to mark their career status as “retired”, but then they can be ignored. Completely.
And one also has to make sure they get off the “e-mail notification” listing too. I mean, how else can one forget about those board when one gets weekly, or even daily, reminders that they are there. And that there may be a job you may be interested in. Or that there were 3 people that found me. Here are some suggestions to expand your network. Or… oh, you get the idea.
These boards are something I shall not miss. One less thing to have to worry about.
